Why choose us

The English-speaking piano school
Madrid's expats trust

"Finding a genuinely qualified piano teacher who teaches in English in Madrid used to mean a long search. We made it straightforward."

At Escuela de Música Madrid, we understand that relocating to Spain comes with a long list of priorities — and ensuring your children continue their musical education at the same level they left behind should not be a compromise. Our director, Malu Roca, holds a Superior Conservatory degree and an ABRSM certification, and delivers lessons in fluent English, Spanish and French.

Whether you are an expat parent seeking private piano lessons for your child in El Viso or La Moraleja, an executive who has always intended to learn piano, or a senior looking for a meaningful morning activity, our methodology is built around your life — not the other way around. Our pedagogical articles explore the science and practice behind our approach in depth.

Who we teach

Piano lessons for every
stage of life in Madrid

Our methodology adapts completely to who you are, where you are, and what you want from music.

International Families & Children

Ages 4 and above · ABRSM pathway

Moving internationally is disruptive enough without losing musical continuity. Our structured early music programme for children from age four is designed around the cognitive milestones of childhood development — integrating rhythm, notation and keyboard technique organically. For older children already on an exam pathway, we maintain seamless progression through the ABRSM 2025/2026 syllabus, regardless of which country they previously studied in. We coordinate all exam registration on your behalf.

Adult Learners & Late Starters

No age limit · No prior experience required

The most persistent myth in music education is that adults cannot learn piano. Neuroscience says otherwise. Adult brains possess a highly sophisticated capacity for pattern recognition, harmonic analysis and strategic repetition — all foundational to piano learning. Our adult methodology places you at the keyboard from the very first session. There is no isolated solfège theory, no passive exercises. You will play real music immediately, building technique and literacy in parallel. Many of our most committed students began piano after 40 or 50 and now perform at our quarterly recitals.

Senior Learners

All levels · Morning & afternoon slots available

Piano is one of the most extensively studied tools for preserving cognitive vitality in later life. The combination of bilateral coordination, auditory processing, memory retrieval and emotional engagement activates neural pathways associated with mental sharpness and psychological wellbeing. We offer quiet morning and mid-afternoon sessions in our studio near Cuzco-Bernabéu, or in-home lessons at a pace that feels spacious and rewarding — never rushed. Several of our students began their piano journey after retirement and gave their first recital well into their seventies.

Malu Roca is the director and lead piano teacher of Escuela de Música Madrid. She holds a Superior Conservatory degree and an ABRSM certification, and has over fifteen years of teaching experience with students of all ages and nationalities in Madrid. What our families say

Real experiences from
international families in Madrid

Piano · Expat Family · El Viso

"As expats, finding quality music lessons in English was our main concern when we arrived in Madrid. Malu is not only an outstanding teacher — she is patient, structured and genuinely passionate. Both our children passed their ABRSM exams with distinction."

— Sarah K., British expat parent · El Viso, Madrid

Piano · Adult Learner · Salamanca

"I started piano lessons at 48 with absolutely zero musical background. Malu made every session feel like genuine progress rather than a chore. The in-home lessons were perfect — no commute, no excuses, just music. I performed in my first recital eight months in."

— James A., American executive · Salamanca, Madrid

ABRSM Prep · Grade 5 · La Moraleja

"Our daughter transferred schools mid-year and we were worried about her losing ground in piano. Malu assessed her level within the first session and picked up exactly where her previous teacher had left off. She passed ABRSM Grade 5 with Distinction — we were overjoyed."

— Thomas & Claire W., British-Irish family · La Moraleja

All FAQs

Yes. All our piano lessons can be delivered entirely in English. Our director and lead teacher, Malu Roca, is fully fluent in English, Spanish and French, making us the preferred choice for expat families and international professionals across Madrid.

Absolutely. We offer in-home private piano tuition across Madrid's most prestigious residential districts, including Salamanca, El Viso, La Moraleja, Pozuelo de Alarcón (Somosaguas), Retiro, Chamberí, Nueva España and Aravaca. Contact us to check availability in your area.

Yes. ABRSM exam preparation is one of our core specialisms. Our teacher holds an ABRSM certification and has successfully guided students through Grades 1–8, Diplomas (DipABRSM) and Theory exams. We follow the current ABRSM 2025/2026 syllabus and coordinate exam registration on your behalf.

We fully understand the reality of expat life. Our scheduling is flexible: lessons can be rescheduled with 48-hour notice, and we offer online sessions via video call when families are travelling. We work around diplomatic postings, international school calendars and business travel.

For beginners and intermediate students, a quality weighted-key digital piano (88 keys, hammer action) is perfectly adequate and far more practical for families in rented apartments. We recommend specific models at different price points and can help with rentals through our instrument shop. For Grade 5 and above, acoustic is naturally preferred.

Not at all. Adult brains possess a highly developed capacity for pattern recognition and structural analysis — both fundamental to musical learning. Many of our most accomplished students began piano after 40, 50 or even 60. Our adult methodology places you at the piano from day one, with no isolated theory exercises — just immediate, meaningful musical engagement.
